Default Line of Sight - Archery

Hi,

Some issues I've had with other games is LoS effecting archery and how it is handled.

What kind of issues are here with regards to LoS and Archery?

You cannot shoot through solid objects... or over a castle. Other than that, projectile distance, arc and terrain come in to play, but LOS.. Pretty well put together here.

I guess I should have added some detail of what the issues were.

-If your standing on a hill and the mob is up or below you on that hill you could not attack with range weapons.

-are PC's / NPC's considered solid objects? ie can you shoot through your team mates?

-are there or have anyone noticed bugs with Archery?

Elevation affects archery. The higher you are to your target, the more damage your arrows do. You can shoot at creatures higher than you, but I'm not sure if it reduces damage or not.

But if LOS does not work for our toon, why is it working for the Mob that is attacking you from way above on a bridge or behind a mound? If they can shoot at you, why can't you shoot back? And on top of that, your toon still goes through the entire motion of shooting anyways only to have the red warning flash above you that your out of sight.

Comments would be appreciated.

Cheers!

It does, to pretty much the same degree you being higher in elevation boosts your damage.

And, technically, it's not an issue of "line-of-sight" as much as flight path. You can shoot creatures you can't see if your arrows will arc over whatever is in between you.

This is also why sometimes you can't hit creatures that can hit you, and vice versa. If their projectiles follow a different arc than yours, they may be able to clear obstacles that you can't. Note, however, that "high arc" projectiles are also the easiest to dodge.

Yes, it is annoying. I don't understand why it couldn't just tell you right off the bat "Sorry, can't see the target" instead of wasting precious time and/or skills/mana usage firing into an obstacle.

Has anyone but me also noticed that different bows have different firing arcs?

for instance my Aschalon Bow doesnt have a really steep arc..but a Flatbow is like firing like "VolleY' fire type arc.

I like using the Flat bow when there is really hilly terrain..i can arc it over mounds and stuff to hit creatures...as long as i can see any bit of a creature i can fire at it.

Even just a little pinch of there head sticking up and i will nail it with Flat bow...but with the Aschalon bow i need to see more of them cause the arrows have a different arc.

All in all though i am very happy with LOS in this game....its not like other games like EQ where if you cant see the mobs feet you cant see your target...which i always thought was dumb.

LOS works good

Yea well said! even in Dark Age of Camelot, if you were a Warden and used a shortbow, you had to practicaly be on top of your mob to actually hit it and by then you were to close to even soften it up for melee combat. The same goes with WoW, once the mob is to close for you, you can't use your bow anymore (which does more damage the your melee weapon in some cases)

And I actually did not notice that your bow's choice affects the arc of the arrow going towards your target. I saw it but never put 2 and 2 together to alctually notice that until last night's gameplay. It wil be great to see how my new Bow 10-14 (I think) will do once I enhance and use it this evening,

And the other great thing is that "You never run out of arrows!!!"

Btw a Toon is another name for your character!!!

Cheers!

Different types of bows have different ranges, refire rates, and trajectories. I like to have 2 bows - a long-range one for pulling enemies, and a shortbow for the rapid firing rate.
